Dear Concerned Citizen:
My name is Mary S. Martin, founder of the SR. Martin College Preparatory
School. I wish to introduce you to the school and invite you to support one of the
San Francisco Bay Area’s most dynamic academic institutions. In fifteen short years,
we’ve graduated students who have enrolled in and graduated from such prestigious
colleges and universities such as the University of California Berkeley, UC Davis,
Clark Atlanta University, Howard University, Hampton University, Morehouse
College, Wagner College and San Francisco State University, just to name a few.
S.R. Martin College Preparatory School is a non-sectarian institution founded to
offer a quality, affordable education to youth from distressed communities. Our
fundamental belief is that every child can grow and become a productive and
influential member of our society.
Many of our students have transferred from the region’s worst public schools. These
institutions were insensitive to the students’ special needs and unsympathetic to their
difficulties. As a former teacher and counselor in the San Francisco Unified School
District, I have first-hand knowledge of the endless ways in which the public school
systems here are failing to educate and cultivate the aspirations of many young men
and women, advantaged and disadvantaged.
I have worked with a highly skilled staff and group of volunteers to create a school
that stands in direct opposition to the preposition that these students cannot learn, do
not care, do not matter, and are nothing more than “throw-a ways.” We teach our
students to be scholastic achievers who are hard-working, socially responsible, and
disciplined in the hope that they will be a resource to themselves and their troubled
communities.
Our children have already come a very long way. It is my hope and the wish of the
entire S.R. Martin community that you will protect the progress by giving us a
helping hand. Thank you.
